Martin Scorsese's Joker Project: What the Hell is going on with the DCEU?
Yesterday it was revealed that the DCEU has apparently not learned its lesson to not overthink things from Batman V Superman last year. In the wake of DC's post-Wonder Woman success, it seems more and more likely that WW was just a flash in the pan. Controversy after rumor have poured in, and none of them sound good.
Let's review: first Ben Affleck was out as Batman, then he announced he's in, then he reportedly signed on for the Batman Trilogy, now he reportedly did not, and now nobody knows. Then Suicide Squad 2 had its director drop out. Don't forget the rumors that Justice League went through re shoots as recently as a week or two ago when it is supposed to be released in November. Finally, we have the revelation of a Joker origin movie.
Wait what? Why? So Warner Brothers wants to start "a new banner of films that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters" with this Joker movie being the first one.
Needless to say I am skeptical, where as nearly the entire community is enraged over this news. There are many things about this to get upset about. The most obvious being that The Killing Joke is essentially the divine origin story of the Joker and many feel like changing that origin is blasphemous. The confusing nature of having a main DCEU continuity with Jared Leto playing The Joker, and someone else play him in this is another one.
Having the guy from the Hangover direct it is a third one. This may seem nit picky on my part, but to me the very vague pitch of the movie as just a "Joker origin story in the style of 80's Scorsese films" has no substance at all. Scorsese is also a producer on this project. I am a writer (as hard as that may be to believe by now), and that kind of pitch is a dime a dozen in creative fields. I hear it all the time, and most of the time it amounts to nothing, and when it does materialize, the results are not pretty.
Get it together guys.
