Gotham City Garage: Is DC Shoving Their Politics in Our Face Like Marvel Has?

My head hurts. I was sitting here, looking for something to write about at work, and then I came across Gotham City Garage, an upcoming DC event (which are a dime a dozen these days by the way) that at first sounded interesting. Some of the brief descriptions touted the series as a "A Dystopian 'what if?' story where the DC Universe meets Mad Max meets Judge Dredd, and there are also a lot of motorcyles", and I thought "BADASS!".

I love Dredd and Mad Max, and I think motorcycles are cool (even though I would never ride one). Then I read that all of this came from a line of statues that were DC women on motorcycles, and I liked that too because I like weird sources of inspiration. I felt pretty good, I now had a story and so I went to go read up some more and that is when the stench of what was really going on was set free into the air and it was rotten.

It turns out that there is much more to the story. Described by artist Collin Kelly as an "anti-fascist anthem for the open road...at a time we need it most", the world featured here is a dystopia because Lex Luthor is President of the United States and has run the country into the ground. Of course. Being who I am, it isn't long before I wonder "Where is Batman during all of this?" Batman in this story is described as "Judge Dredd", further detailed as "a man who should have become a champion of the innocent is now a dark figure charged with keeping the people in line through any means necessary. A figure known only as The Bat."

Everybody working on this is should all get lost and never come back.

Besides slapping us all with their high and mighty sense of righteousness, I don't think I have read such poor understandings of either Judge Dredd or Batman. This stupid obsession over fascism "some people" have, especially when they define it so poorly, has reared its ugly head once again. If you read Judge Dredd as a symbol of fascism, you should go live in Mega City-One without him and let me know how that works out. He's a drastic measure that the free world was forced to take to survive an overpopulation ridden with crime, drug use and hopelessness. He's a symbol of survival.

Batman is a lawman now? I guess we're ignoring that he's only Batman and not some FBI agent because he believes justice and the law are not the same? You know, a cornerstone of the character? Also, please don't tell me he kills now, I am not looking forward to another "Batman doesn't kill people" community-wide debate agaiIt seems that a serious problem I previously thought was exclusive to Marvel has infected DC as well. When are the publishers going to finally understand that fans don't want to be force-fed their political hangups? That their "symbols of America and justice are evil because they are broken systems" metaphors suck?

Some will bring up that comics have been dealing with social issues such as racism since the 60's, and to them I say that it may be splitting hairs, but 1. There is a difference between politics and social issues even if they overlap sometimes. 2. The people at Marvel have become consumed totally with their political ideologies, far more than the extent that the creators of the 60s would address a topic in an issue here and there. They have changed ENTIRE CHARACTERS to fit their PC mold. This is a quality article on the mess going on at Marvel: https://thefederalist.com/2017/04/12/forcing-political-correctness-employees-characters-killing-marvel-comics/#.WO-QBveejCI.twitter

The low sales will just continue until the publishers get that all we want is quality storytelling.
