Is Cleganebowl Confirmed? Everything You Need To Know
Ask any Game of Thrones fan what they hope to see in Season 7 and likely you'll hear some excited yelling about Cleganebowl.
Game of Thrones is known to occasionally bring fan theories to the screen, and Cleganebowl is one of the most highly anticipated for season 7.
What is Cleganebowl, and why should I care?
In short, Cleganebowl is the colliding of Sandor "The Hound" Clegane and Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane's story arcs.
Early on in the series we learn that while the two brothers are both loyal knights to House Lannister, that's where the similarities end.
In both the show and the novels, it is revealed that Sandor resents his older brother for years of abuse (the burns on his face, for example, were caused by Gregor's affinity for torturing his younger brother).
Since the beginning of the series, the two have followed very different paths, Sandor leaving King's Landing with Arya, and Gregor staying to fight for Cersei.
Needless to say, the Clegane brothers aren't each other's biggest fans.
In fact, the two seem to really want to kill each other.
Which is precisely what Cleganebowl is all about - GoT fans are getting hyped to see the Cleganes meet again, commencing in the duel of a lifetime.
It's not surprising that one of the most long-awaited fan events of the series is two brothers fighting to the death, when you think about it.
SO, is Cleganebowl confirmed??
Although Gregor dies in the duel with Oberyn Martell, he is resurrected as a weird zombie-mountain-clegane to continue fighting for Cersei.
And The Hound seems to be left for dead after his encounter with Brienne of Tarth (although in the books it's Gregor's men who ambush him on the road), but the events of Season 6 found him alive and a part of the Brotherhood Without Banners. It seems as though Season 7 will have him journeying beyond the wall with Beric Dondarrion and Jon Snow.
So the two brothers are both alive (ish), so physically Cleganebowl is theoretically possible.
The key may be in the trailers - a quick shot of what looks to be Sandor Clegane drawing his sword appears in the most recent trailer for Season 7, and fans are speculating (or maybe just hoping) that this is tentative confirmation of Cleganebowl.
It's also been hinted at that the last episode of the season will contain a meeting of several highly influential characters at the Dragonpit of King's Landing.
It's unclear so far what happens at the Dragonpit, but it could be some sort of duel. Like a duel between two brothers. Like a duel between Gregor and Sandor Clegane. Like CLEGANEBOWL.
Now that Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane is officially Cersei's zombie bodyguard, if she were to face a trial-by-combat he would likely be her first choice to represent her on the battlefield, and Sandor, if he's in the area, would be more than happy to be Gregor's opposition.
Some Cleganebowl supporters see Maggy the Frog's prophecy as referring to Gregor and Sandor Clegane.
Maggy tells young Cersei that the Valonqar (little brother) will "wrap his hands around your pale white throat and chooke the life from you."
Most theories have taken this to mean either Tyrion or Jaime will be the one to end Cersei's life, but Cleganebowl fans have mentioned that the prophecy states "the valonqar," not "your valonqar," which implies that any little brother could be the one to kill Cersei.
Is it possible that, in her trial-by-combat, Sandor Clegane is the one to finally kill Cersei?
It's all pretty speculative, but with both brothers still alive and kicking and angry, it's not impossible that their paths will cross.
We'll find out when Season 7 airs on July 16th.
