A Breakdown Of How Jorah May Cure His Greyscale

157 Reads

HelloGiggles

In Season 5 of Game of Thrones, Ser Jorah Mormont traverses Old Valyria with a captive Tyrion Lannister, who he hoped was his ticket back into Daenerys Targaryen’s good graces.

But the voyage took a darker turn when the pair was attacked by Stone Men, men whose humanity was lost to the disease greyscale. While Tyrion escaped the attack unharmed, Ser Jorah had come into contact with the deadly disease.

Winter is Coming

While he finally does return to Daenerys, he keeps her at arm’s length, not wanting to see her suffer the effects of the disease.

Knowing that the greyscale will eventually drive him to the point of insanity, he tells Daenerys that he plans to die before the disease affects his mind. But Daenerys won’t accept Jorah’s self-inflicted death sentence, and commands him to find a cure.

But Jorah’s greyscale is quickly consuming his body; how will he heal his disease in time?

Winter is Coming

We know that Princess Shireen Baratheon is the only other character who has been cured of greyscale, but Jorah’s disease is much farther along.

The answer may be closer than we think -- back in Season 2 of Game of Thrones, Daenerys and Jorah find themselves in the city of Qarth. The travelers are taken in by Xaro Xhoan Daxos, one of the Thirteen, who conspire to steal Daenerys’ dragons.

Jorah, on his search for the stolen dragons, runs into Quaithe, a mysterious woman in a gold mask who just may have the information that Jorah needs to cure his greyscale in Season 5.

Winter is Coming

Quaithe’s mysterious powers are evidenced when Jorah comes across her tattooing symbols into a man’s back.

She justifies her actions to Jorah, telling him that “This man must sail past Old Valyria. All who travel close to the doom must have protection.” Is it possible that the tattoos are a protection against the greyscale carried by the Stone Men of Old Valyria? If so, would Quaithe have the knowledge to cure Jorah?

Although he does not appear in the show, in A Dance with Dragons Victarion Greyjoy has a wound that is healed through a form of blood and fire magic.

Could Daenerys’ dragons breathe a fire that would cure Jorah’s greyscale? After all, as Quaithe tells Jorah in Season 2, “Dragons are fire made flesh. And fire is power.”
