Song Review: "Dig Down" by Muse
I will be reviewing Muse’s new song released on May 18th, 2017. It’s called “Dig Down” and… oh boy.
Muse, being one of my top two favorite bands of all-time, has never failed to disappoint with any song. Sure, there are times when I feel as if they lost inspiration, but with enough time, I find their message quickly.
Of course, I have my favorites, but that’s for a different article.
The music video is about this woman who has one leg, making her way through what seems to be an abandoned warehouse. She is apparently at war and fighting people under mind-control. She makes a cool weapon halfway through her journey, doubling as a prosthetic leg.
She fights towards the end using a lot of martial art techniques and ends up being overpowered. She activates her weapon and manages to stay alive and move forward towards her goal. Her goal is a series of wires and machines that controls her enemies. It’s a very cool video to go along with the song.
“Dig Down” is very reminiscent of Muse’s single off "The 2nd Law" album, “Madness”. It starts and maintains a constant 3 note pulse of a synth.
Chris Wolstemholme plays this on a Misa Kitara, which coincidentally, he also uses on “Madness”. It’s a simple electronic rock song, but the lyrics are very Muse-style: Political, hope, and perseverance.
The first verse has lyrics which struck home with me:
“When God decides to look the other way and a clown takes the throne, we must find a way, face the firing squad, against all the odds, you will find a way”
I really do think these lyrics are talking about the current US president, Donald Trump. It doesn’t surprise me really, I expected them to speak about Trump one day, whether it be in song or in interview.
It builds up as time passes, and contains a fuzz guitar solo, also reminiscent of “Madness”.
That makes me pretty sad how two albums later, the song is basically a “Madness” Part 2, ha ha ha!
Matt Bellamy commented on the song and said,
“When I was writing this song, I was looking to counteract the current negativity in the world and give inspiration, optimism and hope to people to fight for the causes they believe in; that as individuals we can choose to change the world if we want to.” (Via Muse's Wiki)
Overall, I really feel Muse is just teasing us because they did the same thing when releasing "The 2nd Law". They first released their brostep/dubstep influenced songs, which I was very confused and a bit sad to at first.
More recently, I enjoy them a lot more and appreciate them. For “Dig Down”, it’s a very good message to hear, especially when one is down and unmotivated.
If Muse isn’t teasing us, we’re in for another evolution of an album! I appreciate and love every change that Muse has made, but it also includes criticism. I hope Muse’s new album is great regardless!
