Luke’s Last Words: What Does His ‘The Last Jedi’ Teaser Quote Mean?

1.8K Reads

The trailer for the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out, and boy is it a doozy.

We see our three heroes, each in their own precarious positions: Poe by exploding ships, Finn is still in a coma, and Rey is training under Luke Skywalker.

It’s the last item on that list that is quite puzzling.

At the end of the trailer, Luke Skywalker says,

“I only know one truth. It is time for the Jedi to end.”

If this is true, why is he training Rey?

The obvious answer would be that Luke is at first reluctant to teach Rey the ways of the force, due to the calamity that was Kylo Ren. Then as time goes by, he sees the potential Rey has and chooses to teach her.

I believe that there is another possibility.

I’ve mentioned in a previous post the Jedi we see in the prequels are corrupted. They don’t serve the Force, they serve the senate. They cling to the absolute of the light side of the force.

Rey says in this trailer there are three aspects to the force: the light, the dark, and the balance.

Luke Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi, represents that balance. The first force move he uses in that movie is a force choke (A dark side move, and he’s dressed in all black.

It’s only at the end of the movie that we see, the shirt was double sided, black on one side, white on the other.

He represents the balance of the force.

This however, is not the conventional “Jedi” way, which means in order for Luke’s way of teaching to prevail, the old way, the Jedi way must come to an end.

What were your thoughts on the trailer? Let me know in the comments down below.

His name's technically Chanoch, but goes by Henry because it's pronounceable. He has an indescribable love for Star Wars, and is finally getting around to playing Undertale. He currently attends the University of Baltimore, working towards his English degree.
