Rating Mattel's Justice League Figures
Mattel has released previews of their upcoming Justice League figures for their DC Multiverse line. Thus far, Mattel has done…okay with their movie waves. For BvS, the figures (with the exception of Superman) were fairly good. Sure, they weren’t perfect and the unmasked version of Batman didn’t look anything like Ben Affleck. The Suicide Squad line was pretty good although the Killer Croc was super bland. The Wonder Woman figures have been the best in my opinion so I was feeling like the line was progressing. Then the Justice League figures were revealed and they are very underwhelming.
One thing that really bothers me about Mattel is that they just don’t seem to care about what the customer wants. They could easily have more fans if they gave us just one request: ankle rockers! But alas, another wave of figures with just the hinge joint at the foot which really limits the poses you can place your figures in.
The Superman figure is basically the same crappy figure we’ve been seeing since the Movie Master’s Man of Steel line 4 YEARS AGO! I don’t know who keeps buying this figure and making Mattel think it’s okay to keep putting him out but here he is again, bearing absolutely no likeness to Henry Cavill AT ALL.
The Batman figure doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the table either. If you weren’t able to snag one during BvS, then I suggest you skip this one and just go get the earlier version which you could probably find on sale. The only motivation for buying the last two figures would be for the Connect-and-Collect (more on that later).
The Flash figure is probably the best figure in this wave. His suit looks super cool and resembles the suit on screen very well. The one thing that has me the most worried about this figure is that Mattle is NOT known for their quality control and with all the different panels and intersecting lines on this figure, you might see a lot of bad paint applications. This would be a figure you go out hunting for because if you buy it online, you might get a really bad version of it.
The Wonder Woman figure is not a bad figure and my gripe with it may be dumb but it honestly just looks too much like a Barbie! This looks nothing like Gal Gadot and I think was trying too hard to be something its not. I’m not expert into the sculpting and design process at Mattel but Hasbro puts out figures that have tremendous likenesses to the actors. I can’t possibly imagine why Mattel can’t compete. Either way, the costume is nice and vibrant but I would pick the previous wave’s Wonder Woman figure over this one.
Cyborg’s figure looks like a bad transformer. It looks bulky and disproportionate, almost like it belonged to a line aimed at younger children. I’m not sure what that extra attachment is…maybe a canon or something but that’s not a good sign for this figure.
Aquaman is probably the second best figure in the line. I like his Atlantean armor and it looks like it has a lot of detail. The headsculpt isn’t bad but with the shoulder armor and the long hair, I doubt his head will be able to move all that much. That kind of sucks for an underwater character considering someone might want to pose him in a swimming pose.
The Collect-and-Connect figure hasn’t been released yet. I doubt it’ll be anything like a Parademon. My best guess is that it’ll be Steppenwolf or some other character that we haven’t seen in the trailers yet.
