The Most Likely Scenario For Superman To Return In Justice League
SPOILER ALERT: The following piece contains spoilers for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. If you have not yet seen the film, continuing reading at your own risk.
It has been more than a year since we saw the gruesome death of Supe in 2016’s Batman v Superman. Fans were pretty devastated because of this sudden twist from Zack Snyder.
However, we were given a certain level of confirmation that Superman will be returning for Justice League, as he is an integral part of the team.
One thing’s for sure, that Warner Bros. cannot kill off a major character like Superman so early on in the DCEU. Although it may seem that Supes is gone for good, let’s figure out how he can be revived by analyzing what we know so far.
Superman dies from a fatal wound in the chest while fighting against Doomsday in Batman v Superman, and ultimately sacrificing his life for mankind (apparently). But at the very end of the movie, we see dirt rattling and levitating above Supe’s grave, hinting at a possible resurrection.
We also know that Superman will return with a different personality in some aspect, as hinted by Zack Snyder.
Although fans have theorized a lot of possibilities regarding Supe’s revival, like time travel or magic in the DCEU universe, the most plausible one suggests that the secret is in Superman’s genes.
You see, Codex is an ancient Kryptonian artifact that decodes the genetic makeup of the artificially incubated babies on the planet.
A primary difference between Kal-El and other Kryptonians is that he has Codex embedded into his cells, meaning that he has genetic coding to all of the Kryptonian bloodlines in his cells. As stated by DC Extended Universe Wikia on ‘Growth Codex’, it has been used to revive dead Kryptonians.
“Though never stated, the Codex's capabilities resemble Kandor due to the fact that they both were used to bring deceased Kryptonians back from death and create a new Krypton.”
Well, there you have it. This theory makes sense than most due to a couple of reasons.
Firstly, Codex played an important part in the plot of Man Of Steel. As Zack Snyder is directing the upcoming Justice League as well, we are likely to see it having a connection with Man Of Steel.
Secondly, this explains why although both of them being Kryptonians, Zod dies whereas Superman doesn’t.
Both of them had fatal injuries, but Zod does not have Codex embedded into his DNA. Finally, the Codex altering Kal’s DNA in order for him to live may be the reason for the change in his character in Justice League.
Justice League comes out November 16, 2017.
