The Batman is in Great Hands: The Genius and the Relentlessness of Matt Reeves

As I mentioned earlier, I saw War for the Planet of the Apes last night. It is now my favorite movie and I will be seeing it again tonight. I have been closely following the news coming from "The Batman", the upcoming Batman film starring Ben Affleck (the best Batman to date in my opinion). Eventually this is how I first heard of Matt Reeves, as he was named the director and screenwriter of the project.

Then at some point he said this:

“It’s a strange thing to be involved in the two franchises which were the two that I was connected to most as a child. I just was obsessed with Batman when I was a kid. What I find so interesting about him as a character is that, as far a superhero goes, he’s not superhuman, he is a person. And he is a tortured soul who is grappling with his past and trying to find a way to be in a world that has a lot that’s wrong with it and trying to find a way to reconcile all of that. That is a really powerful character, in the same way that Caesar is such a powerful character.”

Since I read that, I knew I was going to see "War". A little more reading uncovered that respect of all living things is the central theme of the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise. Being a strong proponent of this idea, to say the least, somehow built up even more hype within me for this movie. This made it the most anticipated movie for me (after Batman V. Superman, which let me down on to a ridiculous degree), and it obliterated every expectation.

This man knows what he is doing. To make something work, to me, the only essential resource is having the right guy and the right guy always loves what he does. Reeves is our guy. Trust me, you want a Batman fan in his spot. Honestly, Batman V. Superman sucked and I understand all of the whispers of doubt after that whole mess, I do. But, with this man behind the camera, behind the keyboard, and Ben Affleck in front of it, we should be confident that we are going to get what we have wanted for a while.

Artists have long been said to thrive when they can identify with their art and Reeves most certainly exemplifies aspects of Batman and Caesar. He is a survivor. He never gives up. Despite his deceivingly younger appearance, the guy is 51 years old and didn't even get his first break until 2008's hit, Cloverfield. From the time he got into the business at around 18 until he was 42 in 2008, he had one movie to his name, a forgettable movie at best. That's 24 years of not giving in, ever. Now, he is getting the payoff in spades and I can't help but admire him.

Reeves is also writing the film, and revealed very recently that Ben Affleck's original script has been discarded in order to fit with his "dark, film noir" vision. The only bad thing about everything I have been reading is that it probably won't be released until around 2019. Damnit.

Bobby Chrisafis is an aspiring Comic Artist and Writer who idolizes Batman and has always cited Frank Miller as his favorite Writer and Artist since the first time he laid down The Dark Knight Returns and realized his calling. He was euphorically happy when he finally met his hero, Mr. Miller (see profile picture). Outside of comics, he is an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Oakland Raiders. He also loves Punk Rock and listening to it way too loud.
