What's Next for the DCEU? Here's All You Need to Know

224 Reads

The DC Extended Universe kicked off in 2013 with the release of Man Of Steel

With three movies in the last four years, two to be released this year, and many more to come, the future looks extra bright for the franchise.

Here’s an insight on what approach Warner Bros. will take on the upcoming movies, and what to expect from each one:

This year’s Wonder Woman will be an origin story and will add Ares, the god of war to the connected universe.

Justice League will follow later in November, and will be the team’s first ever live-action film. Steppenwolf, a member of the Darkseid’s elite, will be the film’s main antagonist.

The introduction of such powerful characters means that the stakes in the DCEU will be high early on. Future DCEU movies are expected to have a lighter tone as compared to Batman v Superman, as proved by the Justice League trailers and Suicide Squad.

Other films to be released in later years are:

Aquaman (2018)
Shazam (2019)
Cyborg (2020)
Green Lantern Corps (2020)

We don’t know much about these movies yet, except that Aquaman will follow the events of Justice League and will not be an origin story; and although Shazam will have a light and comedic tone, the stakes will be real just like in Justice League.

Apart from the announced film slate, Warner Bros. is working on some other projects as well that are in various stages of development.

These include:

An untitled Man of Steel sequel
An untitled Justice League sequel
The Flash
The Batman
An untitled Suicide Squad sequel
Untitled Black Adam, Nightwing, and Batgirl movies

Similar to Aquaman , The Flash will not be an origin story, rather it will be a continuation of former DCEU films. According to Ben Affleck, his solo Batman movie will borrow material from the comics, but basically it will be an “original story”.

An interesting possibility put out by David Ayer is the Suicide Squad sequel being R-rated, which will certainly give a new perspective to the DC universe.

An another (possibly R-rated) movie,  Gotham City Sirens is also in the works, in which characters such as Catwoman, Black Canary, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy are rumored to appear.

A Dark Universe film is under consideration by Warner Bros. as well, which may portray sorcerers like Constantine, Zatanna and Giovanni, and will further explore the potentials of a DCU.

Judging from the variety of genres Warner Bros. has decided to explore in the DCEU, it seems we will get to see the universe grow from every viewpoint possible: Origin stories, continuations, lightheaded comedies, and R-rated films. For now, as fans, we can only hope for the best.
