The Best Comic Cons NOT in San Diego
Credit: Anime Cons
It's that time of year again when comic fans around the world outside of California moan in unison. It's of course the kickoff of the San Diego International Comic Con. Hailed as "the mecca" for fans of comic books (in fact many of the event's social media handles are simply "comiccon"), everybody that is can't get there is usually at least a little bummed out this week, of course myself included.
Don't be upset too long though, here are some great (even as good in some cases) alternatives!
New York Comic Con
The obvious choice, NYCC is basically heralded as the East Coast SDCC. It matches the atmosphere and attendance numbers of SDCC, but unfortunately the setup is awful. I don't really recommend this one because their allocation of tickets and other weird decisions (getting rid of 3 day passes this year) seem to just exist only to piss people off. However, if you're going just to feel what it's like to be at the San Diego one, this one is for you.
Heroes Comic Con
Though in the Carolinas, or maybe because, Heroes Con is a convention that puts up a TON of guests at dirt cheap prices. If travel was not an issue I would have most certainly gone to this past one. Seriously, the value for the sheer number of great guests is unreal.
Boston Comic Con
I love Boston Comic Con. Which is saying something because Boston is also the home of my most hated sports teams. I met Frank Miller there last summer, so it will always hold a special place to me. I will be going again this year. Prices are reasonable and they put up an all-star lineup consistently. A little unorganized, but other than that, always a true blast.
Big Apple Comic Con
By far, my absolute favorite con. As a kid I used to go Bi-monthly, so I have gone to at least 10 times. It's just great. The atmosphere is something to experience. Great guests are bountiful (Met Jim Steranko and Jim Lee at the last one in March). The people are nice! The vendors will talk to you and are willing to haggle, unprovoked sometimes! THIS is the con to go to.
