Suicide Squad 2 Director Frontrunner Drops Out
Jaume Collet-Serra has departed Suicide Squad 2 in favor of directing Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise.
Ironic, considering Dwayne Johnson is set to play a big part in the DCEU moving forward as Black Adam.
Collet-Serra was Warner Bros.' top choice to direct the sequel, but they have since moved on.
The film is still on track for a 2019 release according to various outlets. The director's position for the film is a highly sought after position despite the first film's lackluster reviews.
The film did gross $745 million after all.
WB has opted to move in a different direction rather than bring back David Ayer.
Ayer played the good soldier when speculation arose that creative control of the final edit had been stolen from Ayer. He claimed that the final cut of Suicide Squad was his even though a trailer company was contracted to edit the film.
This situation echoed the Fant4stic situation when director Josh Trank attacked the movie and said the final cut was not his own.
In contrast, Ayer fell on his sword for WB and seemed to get rewarded with another job, Gotham City Sirens.
Although there have been some rumors about WB kicking Ayer off of Sirens, Ayer tweeted out a photo indicating that he remains on board.

Mel Gibson was attached to Suicide Squad 2, and then later Collet-Serra, but both have since walked away.
Collet-Serra has directed The Shallows, Non-Stop, Orphan and House of Wax.
While these movies received iffy reviews, they made a lot of money (which would've made him a perfect choice for Suicide Squad!).
Collet-Serra is seen as a bit of a rising star. He now moves on to Jungle Cruise which is described as an Indiana Jones-type adventure with America's sweetheart, The Rock.
It's hard to fault him for choosing the People's Champion over DAMAGED.
